NEW JERSEY (MYFOXNY.COM) -

A vehicle struck and killed a firefighter with the New Jersey Forest Fire Service during a controlled burn in Hunterdon County, authorities said.

Firefighters were working along Route 629 near the Round Valley Reservoir in Clinton Township Thursday when the wind shifted and heavy smoke from the burn reduced visibility along the route, County Prosecutor Anthony Kearns said in a statement.

That is when a vehicle struck Jeffrey Scheuerer, 35, of Raritan Township.

"Our deepest condolences go out to the victim's family and his colleagues in the Forest Fire Service," Kearns said.

The Clinton Township Police Department and the Hunterdon County Prosecutor's Office Fatal Accident Collision Team are investigating the incident.

Officials have not released the name of the driver.

Scheurer was also a member of the Readington Volunteer Fire Company, the AP reported.
