Tow truck driver narrowly misses bullet through window

Posted: Updated:

A tow truck driver was nearly killed by a stray bullet while driving along the Loop 303 in north Phoenix. The bullet hit the driver's side window, and whizzed by just in front of his face Thursday morning.

It was a close call for Bryce Meyer. He was driving on Loop 303, about a mile from the I-17, at 3:30 a.m. He didn't see hear anything or see anyone, and there is nothing out there for miles. Police don't know where that bullet came from.

"I could hear it, it was quick, whizzing by really fast, at first I didn't know what it was," says Meyer, 22. "When it came through, shot over my arm, through the mirror and straight out the windshield."

He later pulled over and called police.

"Frozen. Didn't know what to do. Scared… the officer actually said it was an honor to be talking to me because I should've been dead."

Police asked him if he saw anyone pulled over or on the side of the road, but the answer was no. Meyer also says he didn't make anyone mad on the road.

Officers believe the bullet came from a rifle. They didn't find a casing.

"He said they could've been sitting in the median, or across the highway. You really don't know," says Meyer. "If I was leaning forward a little bit… I would've been hit in the face."

Police added there are no other reports of this type of activity. The person responsible is facing criminal damage and more serious charges. Anyone with information is asked to come forward.

FOX 10's Jill Monier reports.
