People had something to celebrate in the Rockaways on Friday. The art community brought something beautiful to an area still trying to recover from Superstorm Sandy.
Rockaway Beach resident Patti Smith played from inside the dome, a new art space that was once a makeshift tent used to coordinate volunteer cleanup after the storm.
"After sandy it made us aware that there was a need to have a beautiful space to meet, perform, and just meet and have educational programs," said Klaus Biesenbach, director of MoMA PS1.
Volkswagen donated the material for the dome. The VW Dome 2, as it is known, has water views and art installations.
Some rockaway residents thought it was too soon after Sandy to focus on a cultural space.
But Councilmember Jimmy Van Bramer said: "When you have exhibits, when you have talks, people will come to the rockaways and hopefully spend money in the Rockaways."
So the relief effort goes in the Rockaways but Friday with are and a little bit of rock and roll.
