Sicklerville Neighbors Fight Outdoor Gun Range Near Homes

CAMDEN COUNTY, N.J. -

Gloucester Township residents are fighting an outdoor gun range in their neighborhood.

"I like to plant flowers, invite people over and have barbeques," said James Mair. He loves his Sicklerville home. Especially his serene backyard.

"It's beautiful out here," said Mair.

But nearby farmland where an outdoor gun range operates is disturbing the peace.

Mair said, "It's not pistols. It's large caliber rifles."

People in several surrounding neighborhoods are complaining about that same wincing sound.  But more than that they're concerned about the close calls they say they've had with stray bullets.

"We're concerned about a bullet maybe hitting the high school or elementary school. In the area there are four schools. Also multiple homes have been struck by bullets," said resident Warren Woods.

Watson Waddell owns the Iron Horse Rifle And Pistol Club and the property it's on. He said, "there's a lot of things being said by the residents that are not so and they don't know the land."

We caught up with Waddell outside the Gloucester Township Municipal Building, where residents went Monday night demanding help from council. We asked Waddell if bullets from the range have actually hit homes. Waddell responded, "I don't want to bring that up. I really don't because it's a situation that has to be explored more."

Waddell said he's not talking much until a land use expert hired by the township reviews the issue and reveals the findings. He also said the range has been on the property since the 1950's
