DETROIT (WJBK) -

Dorothy is playful, curious and incredibly sweet.  The two-year-old pit bull mix was picked up by the Michigan Humane Society a couple of weeks ago after someone called in a report of an injured dog near Evergreen and Puritan in Detroit.

Dorothy's jaw was bloodied and fractured.  Perhaps she was hit by a car, or so they thought.

"She was bleeding from the mouth.  She was having trouble breathing.  She was banged up on her front legs, on her side.  Her face had scars all over it," said Gabi Vannini with the Michigan Humane Society.

Then they found something even more disturbing.  Dorothy had been shot.

"It seemed like it was a gunshot wound through her nose and through her palate, out her jaw.  She had broken teeth, shattered bone, and we had to clean that all out.  It was about a four-and-a-half hour surgery," Vannini said.

Her jaw is crooked and probably always will be from being shot and the subsequent surgeries.  However, despite all that, Dorothy has the sweetest disposition.

"She loves everybody.  She wiggles right up to you.  She just wants to be loved," said Vannini.

If anyone knows who hurt Dorothy, please contact the animal cruelty investigators at the Michigan Human Society.

Dorothy will eventually be available for adoption, but it will probably be a couple of months before she is all healed and ready to find a forever home.
