Obama endorses Robin Kelly in Jackson Jr's old district

CHICAGO (Associated Press) -

The leading candidate to replace former Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. has received a boost from President Barack Obama.

Robin Kelly is the Democratic nominee for the Chicago area seat. She's expected to easily capture the heavily-Democrat district in next week's special election.

In a Tuesday statement released through Kelly's campaign, Obama says he's confident Kelly is the "perfect choice" to represent the district. He calls her a "tireless champion" for small businesses. Democratic National Committee officials confirmed the statement.

Kelly is a former state representative. She faces Republican Paul McKinley on the ballot. The political newcomer led the field of GOP candidates by just a few votes.

Obama backed Jackson in 2012's primary.

Jackson resigned in November. In February, he pleaded guilty to charges accusing him of misspending campaign funds.
