PHILADELPHIA -

A fire in Philly's East Oak Lane neighborhood claimed the life of a young man with Autism when he ran back inside his burning home.

The fire was sparked around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday on the 6600 block of North 12th Street. When crews arrived, the home was engulfed in flames.

Family members told firefighters the 22-year-old victim was trapped inside.

His mom had tried to pull him out, but he panicked and ran back in.

Crews rushed in, but the fire was simply too dangerous. They later found the 22-year-old's body inside, on the second floor.

"They extended themselves and tried to go after this fire. There was absolutely too much volume of fire," Fire Commissioner Lloyd Ayers said. "The chief officers had to make the decision to pull them out and fight the fire from the exterior. So, we never really had the opportunity to rescue this young man. They tried but couldn't do it."

The victim's mom and another person who lived in the home were taken to the hospital, but are expected to be OK.

Investigators are now trying to determine what sparked the fire.

The local chapter of the American Red Cross tells FOX 29 it is helping several people who were affected by the fire.
