World Autism Day

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

April 2, 2013, was the 6th annual World Autism Day.

The Empire State Building was lit up in blue in honor of the day, as were the Rutgers Athletic Center in New Jersey, the Intrepid Sea, Air, and Space Museum, and thousands of other iconic structures, buildings, and landmarks in more than 750 U.S. cities and more than 90 countries.

Light It Up Blue is about raising awareness around the world for this global effort to draw attention to autism and the needs of the autism community, said Liz Feld, the president of Autism Speaks, an advocacy organization.

"The fact is there is a real increase and when you're talking about 1 in 50 children being diagnosed with autism 20 years ago it was 1 in 10,000, 8 years ago it was 1 in 166, those are real increases and we need the answers," she says.

The Ralph Lauren store on the city's Upper East Side was also lit up. Toys R Us in Times Square offered free totes to people who made a $10 donation.
