Eddie Basha's son: Grateful for outpouring of support

CHANDLER, Ariz. -

The family of legendary grocer Eddie Basha is preparing for his memorial service this weekend. Wednesday, the new president and CEO of Bashas', Eddie's oldest son, talked about the legacy his father left behind.

Trey Basha was named president and CEO in January. He says his father's death was a shock to all of them.

While many know Basha was a giving man, his family is still learning of just how charitable he was.

"I think that we're all still in a little bit of a state of shock, overall we're doing well."

Trey Basha says his father Eddie went into the hospital with an infection and suddenly passed away last Tuesday. He was 75 years old.

"What's really buoyed us up as a family is just the outpouring of love and support from so many people," says Trey Basha.

Basha was known for his family's chain of grocery stores. To his family he leaves behind a legacy of education, work ethic and community support.

"We'll never know, even his family, we'll never know all of the acts he did because most of them he did anonymously or he did without fanfare."

Trey spoke about his father at Bashas' corporate office in Chandler.

"Where we're sitting is where my grandfather and great uncle opened their first store."

The place that was once a grocery store warehouse now houses a massive art collection. For 40 years, Eddie Basha collected western and Native American art -- everything from baskets to sculptures to paintings. 3,000 pieces sit in this gallery. It's free and open to the public 5 days a week.

"It's just wonderful here," says visitor Sharon Brodhun.

A sign now sits in the entry way -- to remember a loving father, mentor, leader and friend.

"He would be incredibly humbled by the outpouring of support. As a family we express our gratitude."

Not only was Eddie Basha charitable, he was a prankster. His son said one Christmas Eddie sent ugly gifts to his friends from other friends. He was eventually found out.

They expect to hear more funny stories like that at Saturday's memorial service.
