DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

Detroit firefighter John Johnson spends his days and nights helping people.  Yet, when his son was run over while crossing the street, the driver didn't even stop.

"It was the roughest thing I've had to hear, my own child," said Johnson.

It happened on Detroit's west side on January 3.  Sergeant Johnson's 16-year-old son, Patrick, was crossing the street when he slipped on a patch of ice and was hit by a car.  His body was dragged, and the driver never stopped.

The impact broke bones and lacerated organs throughout Patrick's body.  For now, he is confined to a wheelchair.  Johnson is a single dad.  He has been forced to take time off from the job he loves to care for the son he loves even more.

"He's real strong-willed.  Actually, during the therapy, he's too strong.  He tries to overdo it," Johnson said.

Being away from work means no paycheck.  That is tough for any family to bear, let alone one led by a single parent.  The Johnsons have a second family they depend on.  Firefighters from Detroit and beyond are reaching out to show their support by helping this family make ends meet.

"I'm used to doing stuff for other guys, and now it's being done for me.  It's a big weight off my shoulders having them deal with things that I don't really have the mindset to deal with now because my main focus in on Patrick.  So it's a big relief to have them, " said Johnson.

Detroit firefighters are holding a fundraiser for the Johnson family.  It will be Saturday at 3:00 p.m. at the Axemen Motorcycle Club, located at 8480 South Street in Detroit.  Donations can be made out to Axemen M/C.  Please write "in care of Mr. John Johnson" on the check.
