Durbin wants coal-fired ferry to clean up its act

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Senator Dick Durbin joined environmentalists in Chicago to try to stop a ferry from polluting the lake.

The S.S. Badger, which carries cars and people from Manitowoc, Wisconsin to Ludington, Michigan, is powered by coal and dumps 500 tons of coal ash into Lake Michigan every year.

5 years ago, the owners of the Badger agreed to convert to diesel fuel, but they haven't done so. The EPA has given the Badger two more years to install an ash containment system.

Durbin called the S.S. Badger the filthiest ship on the great lakes and wants the EPA to stop giving the owners extensions.
