NRA Says Background Checks Will Not Prevent Shootings

Posted: Updated:

The National Rifle Association has issued a statement in opposition to the recent deal by senators on more extensive background checks for gun purchasers.

The NRA's statement says, "Expanding background checks at gun shows will not prevent the next shooting, will not solve violent crime and will not keep our kids safe in schools."

The association cites America's "broken mental health system" as the cause of the tragedies, and says the situation will not be fixed by more background checks at gun shows. It further added that background checks could not have prevented the disasters in Newtown, Aurora, or Tucson.

"President Obama should be as committed to dealing with the gang problem that is tormenting honest people in his hometown as he is to blaming law-abiding gun owners for the acts of psychopathic murderers," the NRA said.
