Talker: Should a transgender fighter be licensed for women`s MMA?

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Mixed Martial Arts fighter Fallon Fox is transgender. She had gender reassignment surgery in 2006 and now fights in the female division of her sport. Her record so far is two wins, no losses.

The issue of transgender athletes, similar to the push for gay and transgender rights as a whole, has been ongoing.

The Fallon Fox story started making national news when a male MMA fighter, Matt Mitrione, made some comments on a talk show, referring to Fox as a "disgusting freak." He said Fox is a man who's out to beat up women.

The UFC suspended Mitrione, calling his remarks appalling, wholly unacceptable, and a breach of its code of conduct.

But, the debate continues.

The female UFC champion Ronda Rousey says she did not like Mitrione's choice of words, but agrees with his sentiment. She says it's unfair for Fox to fight in the women's division. Her argument is that Fox may be a woman, but she still has the strength of a man, and thus an unfair advantage.

Some doctors say that's not true. Marci Bowers is one of the top experts in gender reassignment surgery. Sherman Leis also performs the surgery. They were both recently quoted as saying when someone is on hormone therapy for as long as Fox, they lose muscle mass, bone density, and overall strength. Without testosterone, they say, the person ends up with the same strength she would have -- had she been born a physical female.
