NEW YORK (AP) - This year's prestigious Richard Tucker opera award goes to mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard.

The 2013 prize marks the centennial of the birth of the great tenor who started his career as a cantor in New York synagogues.

Each year, an American singer on the edge of a major international career wins the prize - and $30,000. It's been called the "Heisman Trophy of opera."

Past recipients include soprano Renee Fleming, mezzo Joyce DiDonato and tenor Lawrence Brownlee.

The Richard Tucker Music Foundation started in 1975 shortly after his death.

The 31-year-old Leonard has appeared at opera houses from Chicago and Santa Fe to Vienna, Munich and Paris, and with the New York Philharmonic and other top orchestras.

If you've never been, the annual convention for comic book fans known as Comic Con can be quite an eyeful. Women and men often even dress up as their favorite comic book character. Some of those costumes especially among the women can be revealing and proactive. Some women formed a group called Geeks for Consent. They have collected more than 2,500 signatures on a petition demanding that Comic Con organizers adopt a zero-tolerance policy against sexual harassment.

You've got a few more weeks to enjoy SummerStage, New York's annual performing arts showcase that's 28 years running. But it's not just music: there is dance, comedy, theater, you name it. There are several shows weekly at 14 different parks throughout the five boroughs. A recent show at Rumsey Playfield in Central Park paid tribute to Pete Seeger. Most of the shows are free and are funded by tickets purchased for the some of the bigger acts.
