Congressman David Scott hosts job fair

Posted: Updated:

Employers hoping to fill hundreds of positions in the metro area held a job fair on Friday. Congressman David Scott hosted his 10th annual jobs fair at the Georgia International Convention Center.

Thousands of jobseekers turned out as more than 100 companies sought to fill 3,000 positions.

Congressman Scott urged job seekers to come prepared.

"That's why I say the key to our job fair has been the three P's and that is preparation, presentation, and prayer. And people, when you bring those three things in person, you have great success," said Scott.

Glen Smith, an IT worker, said he's been unemployed for months. He hopes the job fair ends tough times for him finding work in a still-struggling economy.

"I don't really know what the issue is.  I apply for jobs, I get interviews, I get phone screens, second interviews and then job's not open anymore.  I don't know if its economics, because of the economy as a whole is so bad," said Smith.

Smith says he sees few signs of an improving job picture, but numbers say otherwise. The state's jobless rate dipped to 8.4 percent -- Georgia's lowest number since December 2008

While those numbers are encouraging, there are still plenty of folks looking, with 7,000 people expected to attend Friday's job fair.

"The applicants we've met with today have been prepared, they've credentials with them, resumes and other certifications we require.  They have copies and they've been ready," said Desiree Boyd, a recruiter with Family Bridge Health Care.

Some of the companies at the event included Lowe's, Comcast, MARTA, Kroger, the City of Atlanta, the Atlanta Police Department and WAGA-TV.
