PHOENIX (AP) - Victims of gun violence are demanding an apology from U.S. Sen. Jeff Flake after he voted against a bipartisan Senate plan for expanding background checks for firearms buyers.

Victims of the Aurora shootings and other incidents are scheduled to rally against Flake Friday at his Phoenix office.

The protesters include Caren Teves, whose son was killed last summer when a gunman opened fire in a Colorado movie theater.

Flake helped the Senate reject the background checks plan on Wednesday despite strong public support for the change.

Flake said he opposed the measure because it would cover too many gun transactions.

Arizona's other senator, Republican John McCain, supported the plan.

Former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords had advocated for more gun control. Giffords was wounded in a 2011 mass shooting in Tucson.
