DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

A veteran member of Detroit city politics says he will not seek a new term on the Detroit City Council.

Cockrel said in a statement Tuesday that he won't run for a fifth term later this year adding that it is time for him "to refocus and pursue new challenges." The former reporter was first elected to the Council in 1997. He became council president in 2005 by receiving the most votes in that election.

Cockrel was elevated to mayor in September 2008 after Kwame Kilpatrick resigned that office in disgrace following a text messaging sex scandal and criminal charges. Cockrel lost to current Mayor Dave Bing in a May 2009 runoff election.

The City Council's powers have been diminished this year with the recent appointment of an emergency manager over Detroit's finances.
