CHESTER COUNTY, Pa. -

A Pennsylvania district judge resigned Tuesday after she was arrested for allegedly concealing a citation to protect her son, the attorney general's office said.

According to the attorney general's office, 56-year-old Rita Arnold resigned from her position as a Magisterial District Judge in Downingtown, following the arrest.

The accusation stems from a January 2010 altercation at her home between her sons, according to a criminal complaint. Investigators say one of her sons was arrested and issued a summary offense citation, which was filed the next day by a state trooper in Arnold's court.

Arnold is accused of failing to docket the citation and follow the procedures of transferring the matter to another district court, the attorney general's office said. Investigators say she concealed the citation for two months in order to protect her son. The criminal complaint says after her son was in rehab, she then allegedly docketed the citation without the knowledge of the President Judge of the Court of Common Pleas.

The attorney general's office says her case will be prosecuted in Chester County.
