PITMAN, N.J. -

A 7-year-old Pitman first-grader got a big surprise from the President Barack Obama after she asked him for help with a class project.

"He's a famous guy," said 7-year old Paige Lynd. She really used her imagination for her first-grade's class project at Elwood Kindle. Students make a bear, pick someone to send it to and ask them to take it on an adventure before sending it back.

"Dear Barack Obama, please take my bear on an adventure," said Paige about how she started her letter.

While most students pick family members or family friends, Paige wanted her bear -- who by chance she named Michelle -- to go to the commander in chief for a stay at the White House.

"I was a little worried," she said.

That's because it had been almost a month and her classmates' bears, including Anna Borgardus' bear, had mostly come back.

"My bear went roller skating and fell. When it came back in the mail it had a band aid on it," Anna said.

Linda Coremin, Paige's teacher, started the project 20 years ago to help her students with writing and geography.

"I told Paige, 'You know, the president is busy.' I didn't want her to be disappointed," said Coremin. She said her students' bears are well traveled and showed a picture of one posed in front of Big Ben in London.

But going to the White House? Coremin said that's a first.

Finally, on Monday after a lengthy wait, Paige got an envelope in the mail at school from the White House.

She said with a big smile, "I was jumping up and down. The president sent an autographed picture, he wrote a letter and sent a story about the White House and the life of his dog, Bo."

The president's letter stated that Michelle Bear toured the White House, sat in on meetings in the Oval office, even watched the sunset with him and Bo.

Coremin said Mr. Obama's response gave a nice message.

"He really emphasized how important it was to get a good education," the teacher said.

Paige hopes to one day meet the President, just as her bear, Michelle, did. And she said when she does, she knows exactly what she's going to say.

"It's an honor to meet you," Paige said, smiling.
