HIGHLAND PARK, Mich. (WJBK) -

30-year-old Jeremy Yancy of Macomb County is still bruised and bandaged after allegedly driving drunk and crashing into a medical transport van in Highland Park around 3:30 a.m. on Friday, April 12.  Everyone inside the van was killed.

Just a few blocks away from where the suspect was being arraigned, the family of victim Lawrence Wright gathered after laying him to rest.

"Friday when he didn't come to see me, I knew something was wrong," said Mildred Wright, the victim's 75-year-old mother.  "It's been a hard time for me, a hard and emotional time, and he was a wonderful son."

Mildred Wright was in the hospital when her son was killed.  She had been in a coma.  He was the first face she saw when she woke up, but it was the last time she saw him.

"It was a wonderful feeling because he was right there by my bedside, and they [told] me he had been there every day," she said.

Police say Yancy, who has a clean driving record, had a blood alcohol level of 0.31, which is almost four times the legal limit.  He is charged with three counts of second-degree murder, three counts of operating while intoxicated and three counts of reckless driving.

Police say they had tried to pull him over for driving erratically that Friday morning, but he took off only to crash into the transport van just blocks away.

"He deserve[s] whatever he [has] got coming to him because I lost my sister," said Darrell Murray, Senior.

His sister, 57-year-old Ruth Brooks, the driver of the transport van, was also killed in the crash, as was 59-year-old Luwana Webb.
