LONG BEACH, N.Y. (AP) -- The city of Long Beach held a ground breaking ceremony on Saturday to mark the beginning of a replacement project that will include the 2-mile long boardwalk destroyed by Superstorm Sandy.

Long Beach, just east of New York City, was among the worst-hit communities during last October's storm.

The entire length of the wooden boardwalk had to be ripped out, leaving only concrete support beams.

Newsday says the $44 million project is expected to be completed by early November. Some sections will be reopened before that, as soon as they're completed.

Residents and businesses in Long Beach say the boardwalk and beach are vital magnets in drawing visitors to the seaside city.
