Wirtz, USO assemble bikes for kids with parents overseas

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Teams of volunteers are assembling bikes to be given to the kids of soldiers overseas next month, as a surprise to brighten their spring from the United Service Organization.

75 volunteer employees from Wirtz Beverage have coordinated with the USO to make sure the bikes are ready to ride when they're given out downstate next month. They were assembled in Cicero on Friday.

"I think it's always wonderful when we can give back to back to the troops, but also the families that they belong to," says Wirtz Beverage's Director of Training Katherine Marsoobian. "Sometimes it's so easy to forget about the families that they have back at home and everything that they're going through so we're really excited to be able to do this today."

"When you think about what that means to have a mother or father deployed overseas and how hard that's got to be growing up like that," Senior Vice President Danny Wirtz adds. "[It's great] to do a little gesture like this and deliver a bike. As the weather gets better in Illinois, I hope it brings a little bit of joy to their lives and very much the least we can do for the families."

This was a "no-prior-bike-assembly-experience" required effort, although every bicycle was double-checked to make sure it was put together correctly, and safe for the kids to ride.

"Certainly our youngest, military kids are challenged as well by separation and the stresses of the last ten years of combat so its programs like this, a new bike that lifts their spirits, lets them know that the community really cares about them," Alison Ruble, CEO of USO Illinois explains.

The caring doesn't stop there. On May 18, Armed Forces Day, some of the same volunteers will travel to Bloomington personally to present the bikes to kids.
