Father gets street re-named in honor of slain daughter

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

It's been just over two months since a young mother was gunned down as she left a store in North Chicago and her father has been working ever since to make sure no one forgets her name.

Joe McFarlane has worked tirelessly to get the street where his daughter was killed, named in her honor.

Janay McFarlane, 18, was shot and killed as she left a convenience store back in February. Her family says she was not the intended target.

Joe McFarlane says his hope is that when people look at the sign, no one will forget what happened on 13th and Jackson.

"We need self-control because the guns are not killing us," McFarlane says. "The people is pulling the trigger that's killing us. And hopefully if somebody sees this sign here, it'll save another kid in this neighborhood."

McFarlane says his daughter is the first African-American violent crime victim to have a street named after her in Lake County.

His goal now, is to share his daughter's story so others won't become victims.
