PONTIAC, Mich. (WJBK) -

Police questioned a 14-year-old student after a bomb scare at Pontiac High School.  We're told the teen was not being very cooperative with investigators.

Police believed the threat was credible because a student described the device with such detail.  The problem is that once police got inside the school, they couldn't find it.

"It's a shame that we live in a society today that has these types of events.  It presents a danger to kids," said Pontiac Schools Superintendent Dr. Brian Dougherty.

There was chaos around 9:00 a.m. Tuesday at the school after a student told district officials that he saw a bomb in another student's backpack.  But this was not your typical bomb threat mysteriously scribbled on a bathroom wall.  Police said this verbal confirmation had all the makings of a credible threat.

"Actually opened the backpack and showed another student something that looked to be a device inside the bag and said, 'I've got a bomb,'" said Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard.  "He described the size and shape.  He said there were wires on it and things coming off.  So either it was potentially somebody trying to make it look like a bomb and it wasn't, or it was a bomb."

A 14-year-old student was taken into police custody.  The bomb squad, bomb dogs, state police, FBI and ATF all rushed to the scene.  High school students were sent home for the day.  Nearby Pontiac Middle School was also placed on lock down.

Pontiac High School was shut down for nearly six hours while police searched the perimeter.  The bomb squad also checked for bomb making materials at the 14-year-old's Pontiac home.  That decision was made after police reviewed school surveillance video and the 14-year-old student stop cooperating with police.

"He's denying everything, but we believe that this witness is very credible.  His movements that we've already discovered on tape have him in areas he shouldn't have been," Bouchard said.

Around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, police found what they called plastic tubing with wires hanging out, but confirmed there was no threat to the school.

"We want healthy, clean, safe environments for our kids, and we go to great lengths to do that," Dougherty said.  "But for whatever reason, there's a trend in America where these kinds of things occur, and we take them very seriously."

Classes at Pontiac High School will resume on Wednesday morning.
