Where do your tax dollars go?

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

The amount of money many of us pay in taxes in a given year is often times larger than any purchase we'd make.  Where does that really money go?  Well, there is a way to find out.

You can find out by going to Your Federal Taxpayer Receipt on the White House's web site.

According to two republican pollsters, most Americans think the government spends more on defense and foreign aid than Medicare or social security. But they are wrong.

As an example, here's where the money goes for a family of four making $80,000 a year:.

  • Social Security tax - $3,360.00
  • Medicare taxes - $1,160.00
  • National defense - $1,101.16
  • International affairs - $76.87

What surprises most people is that only $77 goes to international affairs, with only about half of that for traditional foreign aid.
