Researchers at Stony Brook University studying how pure gold nano-particles found in makeup and anti-aging creams and used to give products shimmer, found that they may accelerate aging, increase wrinkling and slow the wound-healing process, reported Newsday.

Good Day NY asked Dr. Doris Day, dermatologist and assistant clinical professor at NYU Medical Center to weigh in on the findings.

"These were cells in the laboratory… there is nothing to prove it can have this effect on actual skin.  Gold is inert and safe, it gives a nice shimmer to products. In a cell in a lab it may not be safe… we have to wait in see," said Dr. Day.
