DETROIT (WJBK) -

University Prep Science and Math is opening a new elementary at Detroit's historic Miller High School, which was the city's first predominantly black high school.

The building is undergoing a $14 million renovation thanks to the generosity of philanthropist Bob Thompson.

"Coleman Young went to this school.  I think Charlie Diggs went to this school.  So it's a lot of history here," said Detroit Mayor Dave Bing.

That history will help pave the way for the future.  Kindergarten through fifth grade students will attend the charter school, which will provide an education focused on science, technology, engineering, math and the arts.

We're also told the school will be home to the Mosaic Youth Theatre of Detroit.

"Oftentimes the arts are left out do to budget cuts and programming costs, but we feel it is very important," said  said principal Kimberly Phillips.  "We need our children to be well rounded, well developed."

University Prep Science and Math already operates a middle school and a high school. Their mission is to graduate at least 90 percent of their students and send at least 90 percent to college.

"Nobody believed that 90 percent of those kids would graduate on time and then 90 percent would go onto college.  That has happened, and it's going to continue to happen," Bing said.

"At this point in my life, I can be really successful in college, and I'm ready for everything ahead of me," one student said.

"You can express yourself through your science and math work.  I just love it," another remarked.

University Prep Science and Math Elementary will be open this fall.  For more information about enrollment, visit www.uprepsm.com.
