Jurupa Wildfire May Have Started By Lit Cigarette

JURUPA VALLEY (FOX 11/CNS) - A wind-whipped fire that broke out today in Jurupa Valley destroyed multiple structures -- including two homes -- and blackened a dozen acres before it was contained.

The non-injury blaze was reported around 8:25 a.m. at Jurupa Road and Van Buren Boulevard.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known, though reports from the scene indicated a tossed cigarette might be to blame.

Flames completely torched two houses and damaged two others, while five detached structures, a boat and 10 vehicles were also damaged or destroyed, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

The fire was 100 percent contained by 1:45 p.m., county fire officials said.

A gas station was evacuated and classes were suspended at nearby Van Buren Elementary School, from which children were taken and placed at Mira Loma Middle School for the day, authorities said.

Sixteen engine crews and a truck company, numbering around 57 firefighters,  were battling the flames.
