Service Dog Saves Blind Woman's Life

PHILADELPHIA -

A blind woman's guide dog saves the day. Police say the dog helped the woman after an intruder forced his way into her home.

Investigators say around 3 a.m. Friday, 18-year old Tomayo McDuffy broke into the back door of his neighbor's house on the 4700 block of Marple Street in Northeast Philly.

The 54-year-old woman's guide dog barked and woke her up.

The dog then knocked the phone off the hook so the woman was able to call 9-1-1.

Police say by that time McDuffy had turned on the gas stove and run out of the house.

"The offender had the stove on which caused the house to fill up with natural gas. The complainant, with the help of her guide dog, called 9-1-1," said Capt. Francis Bachmayer with Northeast Detectives.

McDuffy is now under arrest. He faces multiple charges.

Police say they've responded to several disputes between the victim and suspect over the past couple of months.
