CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

The bicycle of a 16-year-old boy who was shot and killed by a Chicago police officer remained in plain sight Sunday evening along with K-9 units, color-coordinated crime scene tape cordoning off the area and heavily armed officers.

The boy was identified as Tywon Jones, 16, of the 1600 block of South Hamlin Avenue, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

It was all an emotional site for Kendra Smith.

"Why are you standing out here with your guns, you have machine guns out here, for what... this is somebody's child," said Smith.

At about 4:10 p.m. on Sunday, May 5, 2013, tactical officers were traveling north on Independence Blvd approaching Roosevelt when they heard gunshots from the west side of Independence Blvd. The officers made a U-turn and crossed the median when they observed the offender firing shots at pedestrians and fleeing southbound on a bicycle while brandishing a handgun.

The officers were pursuing the offender when he turned towards the officers and fired shots at them. Due to this action, the officers discharged their weapons and struck the offender.

Shashica Hopson, a nursing student at Malcolm X College, says she watched a police officer pull up and shoot the teenager near 13th and Independence in Lawndale.

"He was still in the car and shot him and got out the car and stood over him and shot him again… Yeah, I was sitting right here," said Hopson.

Hopson says the teen was firing shots at another boy moments before police arrived.

"As he was shooting and the boy was shooting back, they were shooting at each other," said Hopson.

"It was getting nearer and nearer like pop, pop, pop, I said no, that is not a firecracker, that's a handgun and then I said wait a minute is that an automatic or what," said Donna Phillips.

By Sunday night, the Independent Police Review Authority said it was sending investigators to the scene, which attracted hundreds of bystanders.

After the incident, the offender was transported to Mt. Sinai Hospital where he was later pronounced dead. A handgun was recovered at the scene. An employee at the BP also said that police were on the way to examine the station's security camera.

The matter remains under investigation and all further inquiries should be directed to the Independent Police Review Authority at 312-746-3609.
