HOUSTON (FOX 26) -

NBA sources told FOX 26 Sports the Philadelphia 76ers requested permission from the Houston Rockets to speak with assistant coach Kelvin Sampson.

The 76ers are at least the third team to want to interview Sampson as they search for a new head coach.

The others to contact the Rockets about Sampson are the Charlotte Bobcasts and the Milwaukee Bucks.

"Brilliant baskteball mind," said Jeremy Lin, Rockets guard. "Definitely knew what he was saying.

"Great to be around. Learned a lot (from Sampson). He just gets it and so it's no surprise that he won't be here next year, most likely."

Prior to joining head coach Kevin McHale's staff with the Rockets in 2011, Sampson spent three years as an assistant coach with the Bucks.

Sampson has been a head coach in college with Montana Tech, Washington State, Oklahoma and Indiana.

He was named NCAA National Coach of the Year twice.

"He would be a tremendous (NBA)  head coach," McHale said. I hope Kelvin gets a job. Kelvin's goal is to be a head coach.

"As much as I would miss him, and I really rely on Kelvin a lot, great guy, good friend, great coach."
