Detroit council candidate's Bobcat cleanup effort upsets some

DETROIT (WJBK) -

Social worker Francine Adams is running for Detroit City Council hoping to represent District 3 on the city's east side.

"Strong lady.  Strong character.  I admire her," one woman said.

Adams says she wants to clean up Detroit and has launched a project called "You Don't Have to be Rich to be Clean."

"We don't have to live amongst the filth and the litter that we're being subjected to," she remarked by phone.

So she rented a Bobcat, learned how to use it and went to work on the alley behind her house.  Video from a nearby surveillance camera shows Adams hard at work.  She hauled mattresses and tires and found a hot tub and a boat.

"We need to clean up.  Don't let things pile up like that.  There should not be that much trash in one neighborhood," Adams said.

But not everyone's happy with the candidate and her Bobcat because Adams didn't dump the trash from the alley on her street.  It was dumped on the street over.

"It just make[s] the neighborhood look really bad," said one resident.

"All her curbs are clean, and I've been looking at this since Friday," said David Pfeifel.

He said Adams even knocked down a few vacant garages, and her Bobcat left tracks that he says will make it tough for him to mow vacant lots.

"Cleaning up her neighborhood destroyed my neighborhood," Pfeifel said.

"They're complaining, but they're not complaining about the right things.  If you take the time to keep your community clean on a regular basis, you don't have volumes of trash like that," Adams commented.

She said she dumped the trash on Grixdale because she found it on their side of the alley, and she requested a bulk trash pickup during Saturday's Motor City Makeover.  But there were so many requests all over the city, crews couldn't get to all of them in one day.

Despite this backlash, Adams said she is still determined to clean up the city.

I've been told the city will pick up all that trash sometime on Tuesday, and hopefully these neighbors will move on from this and work together to clean up their block.
