PHOENIX -

A play based on California's ban on gay marriage will hit the stage Tuesday night in downtown Phoenix. The stage at the Herberger is set. The cast is ready to go.

"8" tells the story of what went on inside the California federal courtroom where Proposition 8 was overturned.

"It really just absolutely collapsed under the weight of their own flimsy arguments," says Grant Woods.

Grant Woods, the former Republican attorney general, plays Ted Olson, a former Bush administration attorney, who supports marriage equality and argued against Prop 8. Woods didn't hesitate to get involved.

"This issue is moving very quickly and I think the consensus out there has changed and people are willing to move on here."

The cast includes Phoenix's first lady Nicole Stanton, former attorney general Terry Goddard, and the play's writer, Oscar winner Dustin Lance Black.

"I was sitting in the courtroom during the actual case and listening to the testimony. And to me it was so incredibly moving because for the first time opponents of marriage equality had to come into a courtroom and testify under oath," says Black.

With the support of New York-based non-profit Broadway Impact, Black's play has been performed across the country.

Its Los Angeles premiere featured a number of famous known actors.

"I am not here to tell people they should be one way or another. I am saying, hey we have to learn to talk to each other and have a conversation. And that is why it is important to bring this play to my home state of Texas, also to Arizona, and across the south to many conservative areas," says Black.

There are still tickets available for Tuesday night's show.
