Golden Corral agrees to pay $50k to family as part of discrimination settlement

DETROIT (WJBK) -

Owners of a Westland restaurant have agreed to pay $50,000 in damages to a Garden City family as part of a settlement to a discrimination lawsuit.

U.S. Attorney Barbara McQuade accused the Golden Corral in Westland of violating the Americans with Disabilities Act and filed suit against the restaurant back in February.

McQuade says Danielle Duford took her four girls to the buffet restaurant in May 2011. The lawsuit said they paid but soon were asked to leave when other customers noticed the skin of Duford's 14-month-old daughter.

Three of her children have a disease that causes skin blisters from just slight friction. Duford told the manager it's not contagious, but the manager insisted they leave because customers were uncomfortable.

McQuade says restaurant owners and operators also agreed to pay $10,000 in civil penalties to the United States.

"We hope that today's settlement will help prevent discrimination based on unfounded fears by raising awareness of the duties to accommodate individuals with less common disabilities," said McQuade.

The settlement must still be approved by U.S. District Court Judge Stephen J. Murphy.
