Family And Friends Mourn Cab Driver Gunned Down On The Job

Posted: Updated:

Thirty three year old cab driver Hafiz Sarfaraz was at the center of his family's whole world until a gunman took his life early Wednesday morning during what police say could be a robbery gone bad at Cobbs Creek Parkway and Walnut Street.

"He's not with us anymore, it's terrible," one cab driver told Fox 29

"We still can't believe what just happened to him. His family. His wife and his daughter," said Wahab Tariq, the victim's cousin.

"Somebody needs any kind of help, he's always there," Yassir Iqbal said.

Family members and fellow cab drivers gathered at the murdered cabbie's Upper Darby home to remember a father, a husband, a hard working guy whose life was snuffed out by a gunman less than a mile from his home.

"They had some type of argument and or possibly a robbery," said Captain James Clark of the Homicide Unit. "This unknown male pulled out a gun fired several times, striking and killing the cabbie."

"He's no less than evil," Iqbal said.

"I hope he gets punished for it. I hope he gets locked up," said fellow cab driver Farooq Ahmad, who was robbed at knife point and slashed just last year.

Cab drivers stopped by the scene to mourn Safaraz and talk about their own safety. It's clear with a killer on the loose they're worried.

"Very worried as a cab driver we need to be safe," one driver told Fox 29.

"These cab drivers are getting robbed every other day," Farooq said.

"For a few dollars, you kill people. That's really sad," said a supervisor at All City Cab, where Safaraz worked.

"It's hard to believe. It's really hard to believe that it really happened," another cabbie added.

Police are hoping to find some surveillance video of the suspect. The shooting came just before the victim's family and friends were set to celebrate a new addition to his family. Sarfaraz had just become an uncle a few hours before his death. Now his family is preparing for a funeral.

Cab drivers are demanding more safety measures to protect themselves, especially at night.
