Superstorm Sandy

Storm volunteers not allowed to put up tent

Posted: Updated:

Served with an eviction notice, volunteers had to move their tent community center out of New Dorp Beach Park.

New York City's Parks Department decided that the center, called Cedar Grove Angels, must evacuate so work could be done on the beach's shoreline. The tent city -- which supplied hot food, supplies, and help to dozens of area residents still flooded out by Sandy -- occupied a 40-foot lot 1,000 feet from the beach.

Donna Graziano, the driving force behind the all-volunteer center, was at a loss. She said she is dumbfounded.

Then the owner of a closed deli and a lot of a washed-out home across the street offered his 20-by-40-foot lot to the Cedar Grove Angels. Wednesday was moving day.

But when the volunteers moved their tent they were told by the Department of Buildings that they need a permit to put up a tent "in order to ensure safe construction, a permit, is needed to erect this type of structure," according to a department spokesperson.

So far the supplies and help will remain covered from the rain until it is resolved if this tent community center is what many call a godsend or what a few residents call an eyesore.
