CHANDLER, Ariz. -

A man who fired a shot at an approaching Chandler Police officer was shot and received non-life threatening injuries Wednesday night.

About 8 p.m. Wednesday, Chandler Police received a call about a disturbance involving a man with a gun near Chandler Regional Hospital. A description of the man was given to police.

A responding officer saw someone matching the description of the suspect walking along Frye Road, and stopped to question the man, a Hispanic male in his 50s wearing a short-sleeved shirt.

The man pulled out his gun and fired several shots at the officer, who was not hit, said Sgt. Joe Favazzo. The officer returned fire and wounded the suspect in the arm. He was transported to the hospital.

No one besides the suspect was injured. He was later identified as Steven Hernandez, 50, of Guadalupe.
