Social media helps keep neighbors connected

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX -

A lot of people don't really get to know their neighbors these days. When Jessica Marquis and her family moved into a home in central Phoenix in August, she was surprised to learn the historic neighborhood had its own Facebook page.

"So I immediately logged on and started posting -- I posted hi just to say we moved in and I had all these people respond, and it felt so welcoming," says Jessica.

Jessica says it's become a great way for neighbors who may have not even know each other in person to keep track of what's going on in their neighborhood.

"If you have some crime going on, you know exactly what has happened and you know what to be looking for. I mean people can post 'hey, I just saw this happening, keep an eye out for a guy in a red shirt.'"

Silent Witness Sergeant Darren Burch says social media has become a virtual "Block Watch."

"Now with social media we can get to know our neighborhood through this outlet. It's a perfect avenue to really know our neighborhoods and help protect our neighborhoods," says Sgt. Burch.

New mom Jessica says it's been a great way for people to look out for each other.

"When you start to be aware and people are saying -- things have been going on -- then you can say, that is a little strange."

"These are the days where we have to lock our doors, we have to protect ourselves, and we have to know what's going on with our neighbors and be aware of who our neighbors are," says Sgt. Burch.
