Court: Ex-Navajo lawmaker ineligible for benefits

Updated:

PHOENIX (AP) - The state Court of Appeals says a former Navajo Nation lawmaker who was paid unemployment benefits after he lost a re-election campaign was ineligible.

The court ruled this week that Bobby Robbins' position as an elected official meant he doesn't qualify for insurance benefits. The decision upheld previous ones from the Arizona Department of Economic Security.

The appeals court says Robbins received $2,160 through no fault of his own.

He was retroactively disqualified from the benefits, and the department issued a determination of overpayment.

Robbins had represented the western Navajo community of Tuba City on the Tribal Council.
