They whacked weeds, hauled away trash, and gave the property around the Lasky Recreation Center on the west side the TLC it desperately needs! First time volunteer, Julie Griggs, found herself working side-by-side with Detroit Mayor Dave Bing. The mayor picked up a rake and helped clear away brush around the playscape, tennis courts and parking lot.

"It's the tip of the iceberg because our city is so large and there's debris all over the place," Bing said. "Anything we can do is a plus. People deserve a clean city."

The Motor City makeover aims to clean up Detroit one block at a time. Volunteers were also busy working around neighborhoods, schools and parks from Van Dyke and Kercheval to 7 Mile. Residents, business owners, religious groups and book clubs are among those helping make our city more beautiful.

"We encourage people to keep Detroit beautiful," said Alicia Minter with the Detroit Recreation Department. "That's an every day effort we look for."

The beautification and cleanup effort concludes on May 18. There's still time to get involved.
