Texting and driving is deadly, still leads to other risky behaviors behind the wheel

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Texting and driving is against the law. But a new study shows that teenagers continue to do it, despite deadly consequences. Illinois officials are looking at ramping up their message.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said it's six times more dangerous to text and drive, than it is to drink and drive – and the consequences are deadly.

The Centers for Disease Control did a survey of 8,500 teens. About 45% of them admit they still text while driving, and 12% said they do it all the time.

The same CDC study found that teen drivers who text were also more likely to engage in other risky behaviors on the road. These behaviors include drinking and driving, riding with a driver who had been drinking and not always wear a seatbelt.

Researchers said the behavior may place themselves, their passengers and others on the road at an increased risk for a crash.

"To some degree, people need to take some responsibility," Illinois Secretary of State spokesman Dave Druker said. "But we have been involved with public service announcements. We've been involved with the Department of Transportation putting the notices up on highways throughout the state - not to text while driving. So there has been an aggressive approaching. We're always looking for ways to improve."

The National Traffic Highway Safety Administration said every time you send or receive a text message, you basically look away from the road about 4.6 seconds. That would be equivalent to somebody driving 55 miles per hour down a football field with their eyes blindfolded.

This generation of teens takes cell phones with them everywhere, and as you heard the new numbers, the deadly consequences are not deterring them from sending text messages when they drive.
