Lowering costs for senior prescription medications

ATLANTA -

There are more than 31 million Americans enrolled in Medicare Part D. And according to a recent survey, more than a third are worried about prescription drug costs. So, how can you save money on prescriptions?

Daryl Blue, 67, must take many medications for his various ailments. He says one type of medication costs him $1,000. Even though a recent report showed that prescription spending was down, Blue has had to make some tough financial choices just to survive.

"I've split pills. I've split prescriptions. I've skipped. I usually try to skip on weekends," said Blue.

He's not alone. Walgreens pharmacist Dr. Mona Majmudar says she sees it every day, especially from seniors who are living on a fixed income. She says skipping or delaying medication is a dangerous gamble. Instead, she says have a heart to heart talk with your pharmacist.

"Sit down with a pharmacist and say hey, maybe we can place a call to your doctor and maybe we can get you something that's cheaper, more affordable, a generic and that would work for you," said Majmudar.

She says if you're with Medicare, fill your prescriptions at a preferred pharmacy.

"Different pharmacies have different co-pays. And if they're in a preferred pharmacy, their co-pays would be cheaper," Majmudar said.

Majmudar says instead of living month to month, there are often discounts for getting a prescription filled every 90 days. That is a small change that could make a difference in your wallet.
