The City of Minneapolis plans to open the doors of City Hall at 12:01 a.m. on the first day same-sex couples in the state will legally be allowed to marry.

According to the Freedom to Marry Act passed by the Minnesota Legislature, that date is projected for Aug. 1.

Minneapolis Mayor RT Rybak said he plans to be there to meet with couples who wish to wed on the historic day, and has even offered to officiate.

Couples looking to tie the knot are encouraged to celebrate inside the historic City Hall building, which has 37 stained glass windows inside the six-story rotunda and features Romanesque architecture and Italian marble.
