ANN ARBOR, Mich. (WJBK) -

With the weather getting warmer the state of Michigan is reminding drivers to beware of bicyclists sharing the road.

The state says there were 1,970 crashed reported involving bicyclists in Michigan last year. Those crashes resulted in 1,598 injuries and 20 fatalities. The number of deaths resulting from crashes involving bicyclists is down 17 percent from 2011, but the state says crashes involving bicycles result in a disproportionately high number of deaths compared to other crash types.

May is National Bike Month and this week is Bike to Work Week and the state reminds motorists to pay close attention when driving near bicyclists and pass them only at a safe distance.

The state says that motorists should pay particularly close attention when driving near bicyclists and offers the following recommendations:

    Reduce speed when encountering cyclists
Don't tailgate, especially in bad weather
Recognize hazards cyclists may face and give them space
Don't drive distracted - No texting!

The state has a comprehensive list of ways both drivers and bicyclists can safely Share the Road.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
