DETROIT (WJBK) -

Progress in the case of a shocking gas station attack that was caught on camera in the city of Detroit.

On Wednesday police arrested a suspect accused of beating and stabbing the 64-year-old victim while customers in the store stood around and watched.

Speaking to FOX 2 from his hospital bed, the unidentified victim said he ran into the station on the southbound Lodge service drive at 5 a.m. Saturday when he had been approached by the would-be thief who demanded money. And that's when the attack began.

"I didn't realize that I was bleeding until I hit the floor, all the blood started coming out and I got real weak and I couldn't move."

And the beating was more than just punches, he was being stabbed over and over again until he collapsed, unable to move. Three other people watched with one person even turning around and asking the clerk for change.

"The three or four other people in the gas station, they could have easily held him until the police got there. But they didn't show any kind of favoritism. It makes me feel like people don't care what happens to other people. I understood that he had a gun, but I never saw a gun."

The Detroiter is expected to recover, possibly going through surgery on Friday. He has stab wounds all through his chest and abdomen area. The pain is made a little bit easier with some faith.

"It's not the choice that you make, it's the choice that God makes." And after learning the man who attacked him had been caught he said, "I appreciate that."

On Thursday Detroit police detectives said they've arrested a 27-year old Detroit man who lived in an area near the gas station in connection with the attack. He's expected to be arraigned as early as tomorrow.

A massive construction project is underway in Macomb County. If you travel on Van Dyke, you know how rough it is. Now, jackhammers are out there tearing up a two-and-a half mile stretch from 11 Mile to Chicago Rd. The road will be milled, then resurfaced with asphalt. New curbs will be installed. Nine intersections get new traffic signals. Sidewalks will be ramped to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Weather permitting, the project will be finished this summer.

Ford Motor Co. on Sunday unveiled a new Escort sedan designed in China for global sale at a Beijing auto show that highlighted the growing influence of Chinese tastes on the industry. Automakers are looking to China's biggest auto show this year to help boost sales in this huge but cooling market. Total sales last year reached 17.9 million vehicles, but growth is expected to slow from 15.7 percent to as low as 8 percent, even as newcomers including Lincoln and Tesla enter the market.
