New Drug MXE Puts Teen In Hospital, Police On Alert

LIMERICK, Pa. -

"Methoxetamine is a nightmare from Hell. It's trouble with a capital T. It's a problem waiting to happen."

That warning from Dr. Mike Cirigliano, unfortunately a little too late for one student at Spring-Ford High School.

Police say she's recovering after overdosing on a fairly new and for now, legal, synthetic drug called Methoxetamine.

"If one girl has it at school then it's  likely others have it," explained Det. Matt Daywalt of the Limerick Township Police Dept. "With it being so cheap and little studies on it. There's concern teens may abuse it and harm themselves."

Spring-Ford senior Ronnie Chrisman schooled us on the designer drug's popularity. He says most teens at his high school know it as ATM, MXE, Mexxy or KMAX.

"It's something under the radar," explained Chrisman. When asked about people popping it in class he said, "Some people have been taking it in school. I've gotten questioned about it."

Though under the radar now, Chrisman admits the white, powdery drug that's chemically related to Ketamine or PCP is growing in popularity.

There's even a YouTube video giving a visual display of how it feels.

One 16-year-old Sring-Ford student who says she's tried Mexxy twice described the high she got: "It makes you happy! Honestly, it makes your mind not think of the bad stuff."

But doctors say bad stuff happens when you take this synthetic drug that's often times packaged like an exercise supplement or protein powder and easily found online.

"These drugs have serious, serious consequences." They can add toxicity to the  brain, leave you unable to walk, to think. Hallucinations and suicidal thoughts are also a problem," explained Dr. Cirigliano.

Limerick Police don't believe Mexxy is a major problem for now. They suggest you talk to your kids and check their Internet browser history to make sure they're not making any purchases.
