GROSSE POINTE PARK, Mich. (WJBK) -

A Molotov cocktail was thrown through a kitchen window of a waterfront mansion on Whittier Street in Grosse Pointe Park around 3:20 a.m. Friday. Fortunately, someone inside put it out.

Inside the house was the homeowner, Art Van Furniture President Gary Van Elslander, his wife and stepson. Neighbors on the quiet street were stunned.

"It's a very quiet, peaceful area," said neighbor Rich Ansell.  "We're at the end of a cul-de-sac here, so there's even less traffic here than I think on typical streets."

Police searched the area near the home and arrested a 20-year-old Grosse Pointe Park man, who they say they're confident is the person responsible.

According to an Art Van spokesperson, police say this appears to be a random incident, not targeted, and that the suspect may have some mental issues.

Gary Van Elslander released the following statement:

"We were home at the time of the incident. Fortunately, no one was hurt and only a window was broken. We are grateful to the Grosse Pointe Park Police Department for their quick action and assistance."

"It's a sad fact that you see this in just about every community these days, and, yeah, we're close to Detroit, but like I said, the police are very present and visible, and I think it's just nothing more than coincidence," Ansell said.
