Coney Island's Nathan's Famous rebuilds

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A welcome sight in Coney Island: workers cleaning umbrellas, wiping down counters, and putting the finishing touches on a rebuilt Original Nathan's Famous.

The Brooklyn staple is getting ready to reopen Memorial Day weekend for the first time since Superstorm Sandy.

When you think of this neighborhood you think of the Cyclone, the boardwalk, and Nathan's. But the spot world-famous for its franks was nearly destroyed back in October.

Bruce Miller with Nathan's said Sandy wreaked the most havoc since the place opened in 1916. The entire business was flooded, destroying all the counters, cooking equipment and basement electric and gas infrastructure.

Luckily, the water did not affect the iconic signage, so the outside of the restaurant looks very much the same.

But you will notice some changes on the inside after months of extensive rebuilding. Workers pushed the counters back away from the street. They've got a brand new clam bar and new register system so lines move more quickly.

Nathan's lovers say they can't wait to try it out.

A NYPD plan intended to better connect with the community seems to have backfired a bit. The police department asked its twitter followers to share pictures of themselves with New York City police officers using the hashtag "myNYPD." Some did share nice pictures, but others not so much. Some of the first pictures posted showed regular citizens standing with very friendly looking police officers.
