Police Officer Shares How He Helped Save Drowning Child's Life

ALLENTOWN, Pa. -

Allentown Patrolman Chad Mertz was modest about helping to save a 3-year-old boy's life.

"I'm not a hero," he said.

The child fell into Jordan Park Creek around 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

"He was totally unresponsive. He was bluer than blue," explained Mertz.

The boy's mother told police he'd been under water for 10 minutes.

"All I heard was 'Oh my God! My baby fell in,'" exclaimed Albie Colon.

He says he watched as two men playing basketball raced from the court to the creek to save the child's life.

"That's some real heroes right there. They really helped that lady out," Colon said.

Mertz and another officer then took turns administering CPR.

"I couldn't do mouth-to-mouth on him because he was full of water. It was coming out of his mouth and nose. He was like a sponge," Mertz said.

The officers' first glimmer of hope came when they finally felt a faint pulse.

"I said buddy stay with me," the patrolman said. "He opened his eyes and made a whimper. "

He was surrounded by people at the park and thoughts of his own 4-year-old.

Mertz says he refused to give up. Finally, he got the signal the boy would be all right.

"I told the guys last night I've never been so happy to hear a child cry," he said.

Mertz says he's performed CPR before, but there's something special about reviving a 3-year-old child.

We're told the boy was talking and breathing on his own, and it appears that he's going to be OK, FOX 29's Omari Fleming reported.
