CANTON, Mich. (WJBK) -- 21-year-old Jordan and Heather Costa of Wayne were married on Saturday. They were headed to their honeymoon in Myrtle Beach on  Sunday morning when police say Jordan lost control of their Ford Escape on an Ohio highway and died in the crash at what should have been a joyful time of new beginnings.

"They hit this median and the car began to spin and actually wound up on the tires, but on the other side of the road," said Pastor Rocky Barra. "She knew that he was hurt pretty seriously. He was unconscious at that point."

Barra, who had just performed the wedding ceremony at Connection Church in Canton, was pulled out of a Sunday service and given the tragic news. Jordan was a youth minister at the church, and Heather's family is deeply involved. Morning prayer services quickly turned into grief counseling for the congregation.

"What can you say? Thank God that Heather was miraculously spared without even a broken bone, which if you would see the car is a miracle," Barra said.

"What's so hard is that they were just entering not just their life together, but a life of ministry together. He had prepared himself. They were both leaders in the church, and it's just very, very difficult to process or to understand."

Heather was treated at the hospital for minor injuries. Police say both she and Jordan were wearing seat belts and alcohol was not a factor.

Friends went to the crash scene to retrieve wedding cards and other items scattered along the road.

Right now the church community is still in shock, but we're told plans are being made for a memorial service in the near future. Contributions can also be made to the church to help the family.

"She's shattered, but I know that she has a very strong foundation in her life and great parents and so many people here that love her, and I know that she'll come through this," Barra said.

Many wedding guests and others who know the young couple are expressing their heartbreak and sympathy online. The church is asking people to pray for the families.
